What Does Good Writing Look Like?

My freshman year of college, when I would tell people I was an English major, everyone would be taken aback like I was about to undergo the most challenging obstacle in a series of impossible tasks. I have begun to realize that most people do not like to write. To me, writing has always been so enjoyable and for the most part, English has always been my best subject; it is my first and only language after all. Because I am an introvert, writing allows me to express myself without having to speak. We all have different writing styles and different ways of getting to the point. To me, good writing is personal. When I read someone else's work, I want to be able to connect with them through their words. I want to be able to feel like I'm actually living on the page with the writer. Good writing is also grammatically and factually correct. While fictional stories are an obvious exception, I would still like there to be some truth to the story. Even the most unlikely stories that defy the laws of nature have truthful undertones of human nature and I enjoy that. With that being said, good writing should also be grammatically correct. There is no fun in a writing you can't read. If you are not one for artistic writing, then go for intellectual or controversial. Writings that are the most noteworthy are those that cause people to think and rethink their everyday lives. The Bible and other religious texts, for example, are very controversial because it forces followers to think about their actions and beliefs. Finally, a good writing is original and fresh. This is probably the biggest reason many people do not like to write, especially in scholastic settings. Most papers for school are not original and fresh ideas because everyone is writing on the same topic or book that years of students before them have already written on. Your teacher or professor already knows what they want to read in your paper; there is barely any room to be original. Good writings come from the heart and soul of someone who wants to change the world. In other words, good writing is much like its author: unique and created to make a difference!
