Response to "The Persuaders"

  1. "The Persuaders"
    • The Persuaders is a PBS sponsored video about the advertising industry, the process to creating top advertisements, and how this industry affects the average American.
    • One of the first things mentioned in the video serious is the word: “clutter,” which, in terms of media, is the overwhelming collection of advertisements built up over time. The video states, “Every effort to break through the clutter is just more clutter…we develop immunities…[they know] the moment they stop trying to persuade us, we forget about them.” Companies, businesses, and organizations will then hire advertising companies and spend ungodly amounts of money to “break through the clutter”; but only a few are successful.
    • In order to “break through the clutter,” many organizations and businesses will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertisement agencies or specialists and spend millions of dollars on the advertisement itself. (141 words).
  2. "The Aftermath"
    • After watching all the video chapters of "The Persuaders," you become more aware of the messages out there and what it might have taken to create said message.  Not just advertisements between television programs, but also the advertisements within the advertisements.
    • With the improvement of technology, people are increasingly able to shift through all the clutter and skip over the many advertisements, which is good for consumers, but is a waste of money for businesses.
    • This is where product placement comes in; I can see when I go on Netflix and watch a movie or television program different products that I wouldn’t have classified as an advertisement before watching “The Persuaders.” It will be very interesting to see what new forms of advertisements will exists once product placement will become clutter because in time all those advertisements will become clutter (142 words).
  3. "The Critique"
    • Although "The Persuaders", made in 2004, was a really informative look into the industry of advertising, it was extremely out-of-date when it comes to advertisements of 2014. Product placement has grown to epic proportions and even exists throughout the video itself and the ideas for advertisements seem to be ever expanding.
    • I noticed when the video focused on the airline Song and the process of how they created their commercial; This shows just how out-of-date the video is because the airline Song is not a big time airline, if it even still exists.
    • Another thing you will notice about “The Persuaders” is the amount of time they focused on advertisements that truly broke through the clutter. They focused so much time on companies like Song, which only added to the clutter, and spent less time on advertisements that have a huge impact (142 words).
